Last night at the dinner table your young daughter announced, “Suzy Smith is getting her room decorated and I want my room decorated too.” Mom and Dad look at each other and an unspoken agreement is reached. “OK,” Mom says, “we’ll talk about it after dinner.” And just like that, a re-decorating project is born.
As projects go, there can be no more fun project than a mother and daughter re-decorating the little girl’s bedroom. The project will require many hours of planning, take many days to accomplish, and give them many years of enjoyment. As with all decorating projects, this one must have a theme to build around. The main theme can come from something the little girl is particularly interested in, some subject or character she especially likes. It may be space or Snow White or Toy Story or horses.
Mother and daughter can work together browsing through magazines and books for possible theme ideas, especially if the little girl can’t make up her mind. These references also offer alternatives and styles that they can get inspirations from. The important thing is that the choice should be the little girl’s. It’s her room after all and she’s the star of this project.
Choose items, furniture and colors that reflect the theme. A safari theme will look great with area rugs and beddings in animal prints and artworks of wild animals. A nature park theme will look realistic with colors of nature, particularly shades of green and blue. The ceiling can also be painted so it will match the area rugs and other decors.
If the decorating project includes replacement of old things with brand new stuff, one thing to prioritize is the bed. A themed bed is a centerpiece of a decorated room where the headboard can be customized. A tip to live by is to get the furniture from the same manufacturer to save money and to have the same guaranteed quality and service.
Another option is to have an artist come in and paint the bedroom walls as a mural reflecting the theme choice. If the theme was castles and princesses, the little girl could be painted in a window of the castle looking out over her kingdom. Or she could be painted on the back of a horse ready to take a jump. Or the walls could be a soccer field and she could be painted getting ready to kick a goal.
Girls who already know what they want to do with their bedroom can pretty much do the whole decorating scheme. Moms are there to guide and encourage. Albert Einstein rallied imagination more than intellect, didn’t he? So allow kids to wander off and imagine. Look where it brought Mr. Einstein. Creativity arises from fantasy land anyway, so in the process, girls who wish to decorate even with the most eccentric ideas are just practicing their creativity and expressing their originality. Mothers would do best to ride along the experience called a girl’s decorating adventure.
